I was prepared for this item to not fit the item description 100% after reading the reviews - most people said it's dark red and not translucent like pictured due to improved lighting for the item when being photographed. What I was not prepared for, was for the heart part of the necklace to look like a totally different color. Even after holding it up to the light, the color did not even look close to the color pictured. It was not even a burgundy, or garnet, it was more like dark smoky quartz that's kind of dull looking. It's such a shame because the chain is so pretty and the metal that holds the gem in place is very nice. I'm hoping the silver parts will make up for how dull looking and inappropriately colored the heart looks.

Best Christmas present, December 1, 2009 By  Samantha Woodward - See all my reviews    I received this necklace last Christmas from my parents. I wear it nearly every day because it goes with so much and adds a little fancy flair. i think it's abosultely beautiful. True, it looks different in person. When wearing it, you can't really see the design on the back of the glass. You only see it really well with light shining behind the piece. However, it is still slightly visible. Nonetheless, it's absolutely fabulous and I've gotten so many compliments and people asking where to get it. Plus, it's very sturdy construction and a nice chain that can be removed to use with other pendants. Other reviewers mentioned that the color is more like dark brown than the light red pictured. The piece is nowhere near as translucent as a result so be aware. It is still a pretty piece on a sturdy chain, not the usual fine tangled mess we often see on Amazon jewlery. My wife loves filligree jewelry, so when I saw this pendant and chain, I bought it for her. It's a lovely piece, and to my eye, looks much more expensive than it is. However, as other reviewers have noted, its much darker than what is shown. Under normal viewing conditions, you will not be able to see the filligree pattern on the back of the pendant. I was attracted to the color shown in the picture, but when it arrived, I was slightly disappointed at how dark of a red the pendant actually was. However, my wife (who hadn't seen the pictures on Amazon) is pleased with it, so if she's happy, I am. Just be aware that it's not going to be such a bright ruby red as shown.
